Crocuses are bulb plants from the iris family, growing 10-30 cm high. These flowers are best known for the true crocus (lat. Crocus sativus), from whose flower stigmas saffron is obtained, one of the most valuable and expensive spices. They have long, linear, clump-growing green leaves. Crocuses bloom in March and April with colorful, large (3-6 cm) flowers. It is common to see light or dark purple flowers, but now saffron crocuses that bloom in yellow, blue, white, or even variegated are also available. They grow easily in full sun or partial shade. The soil should be light, fertile, and well-drained. The bulbs should be planted 6-10 cm deep, with 10-15 cm spacing between plants. Crocuses can grow in one spot for 3-4 years. They can be planted in groups not only in rockeries, separate flower beds, or pots but also in lawns.
